In line with the views presented in Egypt – a case study in democracy, I believe that for the success of democracy, it is imperative for all parties to use available non-violent and legitimate options (including legal recourse and no-confidence motion) to achieve their objectives, and not resort to holding the nation to ransom like the Left parties are now planning to do. Disruption of normal flow of life and destruction of public property should be dealt with by the government through all means open to them including forceful removal of activists who are threatening to lay siege on secretariat and other government offices. Such strong response from the Government and prompt action to prevent lawlessness will help democracy prevail in the long run. People have a right to participate in strikes. But this cannot be at the expense of a similar right of others to carry out their duty. The Government is duty-bound to safeguard the rights of all. Any attempt by unruly mobs to enforce their will on others and bring a city to standstill should be defeated.
